Road shoes and trail shoes: begin with the ground

Ground conditions should lead the comparison, not the appearance of a shoe.

Describe the route

Pavement, compact paths, loose ground, mud and technical rock place different demands on footwear. A single trail label cannot describe every route.

Look beyond the lugs

Consider the outsole pattern alongside fit, protection, upper construction and the surface in wet conditions. A large lug is not automatically the best answer on every trail.

Explain your experience

When writing a review, identify the route, weather and approximate distance. Avoid treating one dry outing as proof of all-weather grip.

Use a practical shortlist

Compare the conditions you regularly encounter with each model’s stated purpose. If most miles are on pavement, make that visible in your decision rather than focusing on occasional adventures.
